One of my top Christmas movie picks!

Griswold family Christmas

The Griswold family has yet another family adventure from hell and this movie has all the clichés. Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) desperately wants to have the greatest Christmas ever and hosts his extended dysfunctional and quirky family in an attempt to share the holiday spirit. He expends considerable effort on the Christmas lighting for his house but can't seem to get it to work. As he desperately tries to get the lights working, his wife's (Beverly DAngelo) idiot cousin Eddy (Randy Quaid) and his bizarre family -- including their pet dog, Snots -- show up uninvited and unexpected. Things go from bad to worse in a hurry. Clark's secret Christmas present to the family is a swimming pool which he intends to pay for using his Christmas bonus from his employer but he's financially overextended because he had to put down a huge deposit. When the bonus turns out not to be the financial blessing he expected, the stress becomes too much and he goes nuts (and gives us one of the all-time classic movie monologues).

Make your own eggnog,

Clark: Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?
Eddie: Naw, I'm doing just fine, Clark.

Eddie: You surprised to see us, Clark?
Clark: Oh, Eddie... If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am now.

Alcoholic Eggnog Ingredients

6 eggs
2 extra egg yolks
4 cups whole milk
3/4 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup plus 2 Tablespoons of sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
1 cup bourbon

Alcoholic Eggnog Directions

Start by whisking the eggs, egg yolks, sugar, and salt in a large pan until well-blended. Keep on whisking while you slowly pour in the milk until it is completely mixed-in. Next, set the pan on your stove's burner and turn it to the lowest possible setting. Continuously whisk ingredients for 25-30 minutes or until the mixture reaches 160°F and will coat the underside of a spoon.

Next, remove the mixture from heat and strain it into a large-sized bowl, making sure to get out any pieces of cooked egg. Now stir in the bourbon, vanilla, and nutmeg, and transfer your mixture to a covered dish. Refrigerate the mix for at least 4 hours before proceeding.

Finally, when you're ready to serve your eggnog with alcohol, grab the heavy cream and whip it well. Now just fold in the chilled mix, pour, serve and enjoy!

Makes 14 servings.

How to have a moist Turkey

Rub turkey cavity walls with 1/4 lb. butter. Add desired salt. Rub outside with salt and melted butter.

Wrap in heavy duty foil with edges on back of fowl.

Place brease down in baking pan. Bake at 250 degrees for 12 to 15 hours. The last hour of baking, turn turkey over, uncover and brown.

Note: Fat of fowls is on the back. Fat will drain down into breast making meat moist. No more dry turkey.

The tree how to keep it from drying out

Clark: We're kicking off our fun old-fashioned family Christmas by heading out into the country in the old front-wheel drive sleigh to embrace the frosty majesty of the winter landscape and select that most important of Christmas symbols.
Audrey: We're not coming all the way out here just to get one of those stupid ties with Santa Clauses on it, are we?
Clark: No, I have one of those at home. What we're looking for today is the "Griswold family Christmas tree."

Todd: Hey Griswold. Where do you think you're gonna put a tree that big?

  • Keep you tree fresh until New Years!

Select the freshest tree possible. Ideally, buy one that is cut the day you bring it home.

  • 2

Cut 1 inch off the base, place the tree in a bucket of water, and stand it in a cool, shady place if you don't plan to set it up right away.

  • 3

Cut 1/2 inch to 1 inch off the base of the trunk when you bring it inside to set up.

  • 4

Place in a tree stand that holds at least 1 gallon of water. Add plain water.

  • 5

    Water the tree every day.

  • 6

Avoid allowing the water level to drop below the cut end of the trunk. If it does, a seal will form and prevent any more water from being absorbed by the tree. You'll need to make another cut in the trunk if this occurs.

  • 7

Keep the tree away from the fireplace, vents and other sources of heat.

Clark: I simply solved the problem. We needed a coffin... Er, a tree. There are no lots open on Christmas Eve. Lewis burned down my tree so I replaced it as best I could. Voilà.
    Ellen: Are you okay?

Art: It was an ugly tree anyway.

    Fun Facts

The Griswold's neighbor's house is the same house Murtaugh and his family lived in all the Lethal Weapon movies. The houses on this street are on the Warner Brothers Studios back lot.

The house front from Bewitched and The New Gidget appears in the home movie that Clark is watching in the attic.

Clark: Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving. Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no. We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas....

    Happy Holidays Everyone!!!
